TURN IT AGAIN, SAM!

Open call for creative projects to participate in the final exhibition of the A*Desk 2012-2013 Study programme, by way of a space for reflection and production, that revolves around education and professionalization in art today.

First there was the linguistic twist, then the discursive twist, and afterwards the visual, narrative and cultural twist, then there was the durational turn, a text by Irit Rogoff called ‘Turning', and then Paul O'Neil, followed by the educational pivot in curating and finally, we are moulding yet another revolution at A*Desk in an endeavour to bring to a conclusion this year of studies where everything is turning.

The study programme at A*Desk presents an open call for creative projects, directed at artists and cultural producers who have an interest in reflecting upon education and the professionalization of art in the current context. With this in mind, the students of the programme are offering a space of reflection in which to share some of the proposals that have been developed during the course and from there, to produce new projects.

The process will begin with a workshop, two consecutive working afternoon sessions at A*Desk in which questions relative to education in art and the implications of the professionalization of this field will be reflected upon. The intention is to generate a framework for the creation of projects that the participants propose, through questions such as: What is an art school? What should it be like? What does it mean to be a professional in the field of art?

In this way a space for dynamic and open working will be created that will serve to share, debate and propose new ideas and strategies. Solutions will also be considered for the presentation of the projects in the A*Desk space and the necessary resources will be provided for the realization of these projects.

The projects developed in this working space will form part of the exhibition and programme of events that will be realized at the conclusion, of the 2012-2013 programme of studies.

TURN IT AGAIN, SAM!

Convocatoria de proyectos de creación para participar en la exposición final del programa de estudios A*Desk 2012-2013, por medio de un espacio de reflexión y producción en torno a la educación y profesionalización en arte hoy

Primero vino el giro lingüístico, después el giro discursivo, después el giro visual, el giro narrativo y el cultural, después el giro duracional, después un texto de Irit Rogoff llamado ‘Turning', después Paul O'Neil, después el giro educativo en el comisariado, y finalmente, entonamos otro giro en A*Desk para tratar de concluir este año de estudios en que todo gira.

El programa de estudios A*Desk presenta una convocatoria abierta de proyectos de creación, dirigida a artistas y productores culturales que tengan interés en reflexionar en torno a la educación y la profesionalización artística en el contexto actual. Con este fin, los estudiantes del programa de formación ofrecen un espacio de reflexión desde el que compartir algunos de los planteamientos que se han trabajado a lo largo del curso y desde el que producir nuevos proyectos.

El proceso empezará con un workshop, dos tardes consecutivas de trabajo en A*Desk en las que se reflexionará en torno a cuestiones relativas a la educación en arte y las implicaciones de la profesionalización en este ámbito. La intención es generar un marco para la creación de los proyectos que propongan los participantes, a partir de preguntas tales como ¿Qué es una escuela de arte? ¿Cómo debería de ser? ¿Qué significa ser profesional en el campo del arte?

Se creará así un espacio de trabajo dinámico y abierto que sirva para compartir, debatir y plantear nuevas ideas y estrategias. Asimismo se pensarán soluciones para la presentación de los proyectos en el espacio de A*Desk y se abastecerán los recursos que se requieran para la realización de los mismos.

Los proyectos desarrollados en este espacio de trabajo formarán parte de la exposición y programa de eventos que se realizará para concluir el programa de estudios 2012-2013.

Para inscribirse es necesario mandar un correo a workshop@a-desk.org antes del viernes 24 de mayo, y explicar en unas pocas líneas las motivaciones de participar

TURN IT AGAIN, SAM!

Convocatòria de projectes de creació per participar a l'exposición final del programa d'estudis A*Desk 2012-2013, des d'un espacio de reflexió i producció entorn a l'educació i la profesionalizació en arte avui.

Primer va ser el gir lingüístic, després el gir discursiu, després el gir visual, el gir narratiu i el cultural, després el gir duracional, després un text d'Irit Rogoff que es deia “Turning”, després Paul O'Neil, després el gir educatiu en el comissariat, i finalment, entonem un altre gir a A*Desk per tal de concloure aquest any d'estudis en que tot gira.

El programa d'estudis A*Desk presenta una convocatòria oberta de projectes de creació, dirigida a artistes i productors culturals que tinguin interès a reflexionar entorn a l'educació i la professionalització artística en el context actual. Per fer-ho, els estudiants del programa de formació ofereixen un espai de reflexió on compartir alguns dels plantejaments que s'han treballat al llarg del curs i a partir del qual produir nous projectes.

El procés començarà amb un workshop en dues tardes consecutives de treball a A*Desk on es reflexionarà entorn a qüestions relatives a l'educació en art i les implicacions de la professionalització en aquest àmbit. L'intenció és generar un marc per a la creació dels projectes que proposin els participants, a partir de preguntes com: Què és una escola d'art? Què hauria de ser? Què significa ser professional en el camp de l'art?

Així es crearà un espai de treball dinàmic i obert que serveixi per compartir, debatre i plantejar noves idees i estratègies. També es pensaran solucions per a la presentació dels projectes a l'espai d'A*Desk i es proporcionaran els recursos que siguin necessaris per a la realització dels projectes.

Els projectes desenvolupats en aquest espai de treball formaran part de l'exposició i del programa d'activitats que es realitzarà per concloure el programa d'estudis 2012-2013.

Workshop with Asier Mendizabal

Front and Back. Four works

This encounter will endeavour to identify or refute as the symptoms of an era, some general standards in artistic practices that turn to historiography, narrativity and referentiality as more or less central tools within their working method.

The role assigned to criticism of comparing contemporary work with the ideal draft of what contemporaneity might demand of it, identifying what is lacking in the work once it is compared with the totalizing narrative that is expected at each present moment, is essentially the wrong role. This, however, is still the way that much criticism is presented, revealing and valuing the recourses that art puts into practice. In this sense it seems appropriate to submit to an examination the double accusation, in principle rightly aimed, that the most interesting criticism currently exposes: first, whether it is true that the recourse to referenciality and historical material, even historiography as a method, are hegemonic procedures peculiar to our time, revealing a neglect of the need to write the present; and secondly if its analysis necessarily confronts us with an unproductive fascination with history as a fetish.

As a procedural condition we will limit the proposed examples to four works and texts that form part of Asier Mendizabal's practice, that will be presented at the beginning of each session. We will confront these with critical and artistic material by other authors and from other times as the workshop develops.

Asier Mendizabal (Ordizia 1973) is an artist based in Bilbao. His practiced, linked to the programme of sculpture, is resolved through diverse media and procedures, habitually including writing. He has exhibited in solo shows at Raven Row in London; Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid; Culturgest, Lisbon; DAE, San Sebastian and in the Museu d'Art Contemporani in Barcelona. He has participated in group exhibitions such as: IllumiNATIONS, 54 Venice Biennal; Scenarios about Europe, Galerie für Zeitgenössische Kunst, Leipzig; In the First Circle, Fundació Tapies, Barcelona; Às Artes, Cidadãos, Serralves Museum, Porto; Després de la notícia, at the Centre de Cultura Contemporània in Barcelona, Manifesta 5 and the Biennials in Taipei and Bucarest.

Anvers i revers. Quatre Treballs

Aquesta trobada tractarà d'identificar o refutar, com a símptomes d'època, algunes pautes generalitzables a les pràctiques artístiques que convoquen la historiografia, la narració i allò referencial com a recursos més o menys centrals del seu fer.

La funció assignada a la crítica de comparar l'obra contemporània amb l'esbós ideal del que la contemporaneïtat demandaria d'aquesta; identificar allò que manca en l'obra un cop confrontada amb la narració totalitzadora que s'espera de cada moment present, és en essència, una funció equivocada. Segueix sent aquesta, però, la manera com es presenta molta de la crítica que desvetlla i valora els recursos posats en pràctica per l'art. Seria procedent doncs, en aquest sentit, sotmetre a examen la doble acusació (en principi correctament encaminada) que la crítica més interessant exposa a l'actualitat: primer, si és cert que el recurs a la referència als materials històrics, fins i tot a la historiografia com mètode, són procediments hegemònics i particulars de la nostra època, deixant entreveure un cert desistir de la necessitat d'escriure sobre el present; i, segon, si la seva anàlisi ens confronta necessàriament amb una improductiva fascinació amb la història com a fetitxe.

Com a condició procedimental, limitarem els exemples proposats a quatre treballs i textos que formen part de la pràctica d'Asier Mendizabal, presentats a l'inici de cada sessió, i els confrontarem amb materials artístics i crítics d'altres autors i moments a mesura que es desenvolupi el taller.

La seva pràctica, vinculada al programa de l'escultura, es resol en diversos mitjans i procediments, incloent de manera habitual l'escriptura. Anverso y reverso. Cuatro trabajos.

Este encuentro tratará de identificar o refutar, como síntomas de época, algunas pautas generalizables en las prácticas artísticas que convocan la historiografía, la narración y la referencialidad como recursos más o menos centrales de su hacer.

La función asignada a la crítica de comparar la obra contemporánea con el esbozo ideal de lo que la contemporaneidad demandaría de esta, identificar aquello que falta en la obra una vez cotejada con la narración totalizadora que se espera de cada momento presente, es en esencia una función equivocada. Sigue siendo esta, sin embargo, la manera en que se presenta mucha de la crítica que desvela y valora los recursos puestos en práctica por el arte. Sería procedente, en este sentido, someter a examen la doble acusación, en principio certeramente encaminada que la crítica más interesante expone en la actualidad: primero, si es cierto que el recurso a la referencialidad y a los materiales históricos, incluso a la historiografía cómo método, son procedimientos hegemónicos y particulares de nuestra época, desvelando una dejación de la necesidad de escribir el presente; y, segundo, si su análisis nos confronta necesariamente con una improductiva fascinación con la historia como fetiche.

Como condición procedimental, limitarémos los ejemplos propuestos a cuatro trabajos y textos que forman parte de la práctica de Asier Mendizabal, presentados al inicio de cada sesión, y los confrontaremos con materiales artísticos y críticos de otros autores y momentos a medida que se desarrolle el taller.

ITINERARY 3: Do, undo, redo

Performativity and narrativity in contemporary art praxis

How does art produce reality? To what extent does the praxis of art intervene in the articulation of social conventions and to what extent is it capable of transforming it?

The notions of “performativity” and “narrativity” currently articulate a series of discourses that situate language and symbolic interactions as central aspects within the production of reality. According to this point of view, the construction of societies and identities can be described as being the fruit of a series of specific cultural processes, with artistic practice also being implicated within this framework.

With the third itinerary in the A*DESK study programme we focus on how audio-visual productions, theatre, texts and exhibitions, affect the construction of how we see and experience the world; while placing a special emphasis on the analysis of the processes explored within contemporary art praxis aimed at altering prefixed cultural norms.

The itinerary is made up of a programme of 10 seminars with invited agents, 2 workshops and 13 laboratory sessions for the development of tutored projects. Aside from the option of participating in whole itinerary, there is also the possibility of carrying out each one of the individual workshops, the seminar programme and the laboratory sessions.
